Burrus Picks Up Best AL Batter Honors for May

Thursday, June 1st, 1922: When Dick Burrus stepped up to the plate in May, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the American League Batter of the Month award.

The young Detroit first baseman posted a .405 batting average with 1 home run, 24 RBIs and scored 30 runs. Burrus also worked pitchers for 15 walks to post a .462 on-base percentage.

Thursday, June 1st, 1922: Heinie Manush has a lot going for him. The Philadelphia left fielder just broke into the majors this year and now the National League has just picked him as its top hitter for May.

In 29 games last month, this outstanding rookie batted .439 with 5 home runs, 26 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

Indian Named May AL Pitcher of the Month

Thursday, June 1st, 1922: Wilbur Cooper's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 7-1 in May, the 29-year-old Cleveland hurler has been named American League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 26 in 67 innings, logged an ERA of 2.42 and allowed opponents to hit .242 against him.

SP Cooper Named NL Pitcher of the Month

Thursday, June 1st, 1922: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Andy Cooper still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 27-year-old starter for St. Louis was named National League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 23 strikeouts in his 8 starts, putting up a fine 1.66 ERA in 65 innings of work.

Cooper has started 11 times this year, pitched 88.2 innings, fanned 34 batters and walked 27. His current record is 5 wins and 1 loss with a 1.93 ERA....read more.



Browns make coaching change

In a stunning move, St Louis' American League club has replaced its manager.

It seems former manager Matthew Mays, suffering from burnout, stepped down as the head man at the club. Acting swiftly, St Louis has hired Sacramento Solons' manager, Pete Grassi to fill the position. Grassi comes in at a critical time as free agency is underway and it will be up to him to make big decisions quickly.
